The Eurovision Song Contest 2020 might be cancelled but the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) will broadcast « Europe Shine A Light » on 16th May at 21:00 CET instead of Eurovision.
Thomas Schreiber, head of entertainment at the German national broadcaster ARD confirmed the news to DWDL.de:
« On the 16th May, there will be a big European event even without the ESC: ‘Europe Shine A Light’. 40 European countries and Australia will come together. »
However Thomas Schreiber confirmed that there will be no voting because of actuarial reasons:
« The event will not be a ESC with a voting but it will bring Europe together at that night, it’s made so that the fans are not left alone and it will give the artists a platform. »
However, Thomas Schreiber is not very happy about the format as the presentation of the participating countries of Eurovision 2020 will fail briefly, he continues:
« I find it difficult if Germany, as one of the biggest European countries, would decide not to participate at an event to unite Europe, that’s why we decided to take part and we support the event now even though we would like to have some things differently, and would have wished to give more room for each of the artists. »
